Sweet or Savory? How to Order Crepes at La Creperie Cafe

Sweet crepe with chocolate drizzle, strawberry and whipped cream at La Creperie Cafe

Guests who walk into our cafe on 2nd Street for the first time often ask the same question: what is the difference between all these crepes? The short answer is that we make two families of crepes, and each one has its own batter, its own fillings, and its own place in a meal.

Savory crepes: a full meal on the griddle

Savory crepes, also called galettes in France, are folded around cheese, vegetables, eggs, and meats. They are made to order on our crepe griddle and arrive hot, with the edges just crisp. These are the crepes to choose when you want lunch or dinner rather than a treat.

Regulars at breakfast lean toward the St. Germain, with jambon de Paris, scrambled eggs, mushrooms, and mozzarella, or the Southwest, which brings avocado, green chili, salsa, and sour cream. In the evening the Crepe Carbonara and the French Riviera are two of the most ordered plates. Both use a cream sauce, so they are rich and filling. If you prefer something lighter, the Ratatouille crepe is packed with stewed tomato, zucchini, roasted peppers, and pesto.

See the full list on our breakfast menu and dinner menu.

Sweet crepes: dessert, or breakfast for the bold

Sweet crepes are thinner and more delicate. Every one is served with whipped cream and powdered sugar, and any crepe with chocolate or Nutella also gets a drizzle of chocolate sauce. The Crepe Suzette, with fresh orange juice and Grand Marnier, is the classic French choice. The Royal, with Nutella and fresh strawberries, is the one kids point at first.

If you want something simple, try the Bolero. It is just fresh lemon juice, sugar, and butter, and it shows how good a well made crepe tastes on its own. For something to share, the Martinique brings bananas flambeed in dark rum with vanilla ice cream. Browse every option on our dessert menu.

How regulars order

Many guests split one savory and one sweet crepe between two people. It is the easiest way to try both styles in one visit. Another popular approach is a savory crepe with a side of our garlic French fries, followed by a sweet crepe and coffee.

A few practical tips from our servers:

1. Breakfast is served until 3pm daily, so a late morning visit gives you the widest choice of crepes.

2. Savory crepes can be adjusted. Ask to swap a protein or leave out an ingredient and the kitchen will do its best.

3. Weekend mornings are our busiest time. A Wednesday or Thursday visit is quieter if you want to take your time. We are closed on Mondays.

Pair it with a glass

Savory crepes go well with a glass of wine. Read our guide to pairing wine with crepes before your next visit, and check our current specials for the latest offers.
